Scaling & Polishing

Kettles which have been used to boil "hard" water which is rich in minerals will soon develop a layer of scales. In a similar way, the plaque that is formed on the surfaces of our teeth due to inadequate cleaning will harden into tartar as the calcium in our saliva gets deposited there.

Once tartar has formed on the surfaces of our teeth, they become virtually impossible to remove by normal brushing.

Left alone, the rough surfaces of tartar will collect even more plaque, leading to gum disease which start off as painless bleeding gums and gradually progresses to gum shrinkage and finally loosening teeth. Many people are not aware of the problem until their teeth literally fall out without any signs of decay. In the Hougang heartlands, it is often very difficult to explain to or convince people that teeth can be lost without decay.

Deposits of plaque and tartar will also make our teeth more prone to decay.

With a water-spraying metal tip vibrating at ultrasonic frequencies, your dentist will be able to shatter the tartar and dislodge it without harming or actually grinding away your teeth.

This process is called scaling and the procedure is usually completed with polishing to smoothen the surfaces of your teeth and to remove stains. Unless otherwise advised, you should have scaling and polishing done once every 6 months.
