Implant Retained Overdentures

Having problems with loose, unretentive full dentures? You're not alone. We see many patients who had this problem until they accepted a simple solution we can offer. implant-supported overdentures.

How does it work? Just like a button going over a hole, the the overdenture system we employ consists of an O-ring within a metal housing which connects to a stud abutment attached to the implant.

Step 1 Initial Examination + Xrays
The dentist will check on the condition of your gums and most importantly, the amount of bone left in the jaw. Bone grafting is seldom needed for the lower jaw (mandible). It is sometimes needed for the upper jaw. If major bone grafting is required, figure on spending an additional S$1000.

Step 2 Implant placement under local anaesthesia
Standard implant surgery is carried out - with one difference. The implants must be placed further in (closer to the tongue) than implants meant for crowns and bridges. This is something for the dentist to worry about.

Step 3 Placement of Stud Abutments/Ball Attachments

Second stage surgery is performed to expose the implants after they have been given about 2 months to integreate. Once the implants are exposed, stud abutments are attached to them. This is what it looks like in the mouth after the stud abutments are placed. Please note that the both the upper prosthesis and the patient's existing lower denture were not done by us.

Step 3 Modification of existing denture

The metal housings containing the O-rings are positioned over the stud abutments. Holes are drilled into the patient's denture to accommodate the housings.

Resin is then placed on the denture to reline it. Positioned over the metal housings in the mouth, the denture will be able to pick up the O-ring housings. The picture below shows the metal housings after they have been picked up by the denture.

When the denture is returned to the mouth and carefully positioned over the abutments, it snaps on with a click and exhibits great retention.

Step 4 Payment of S$5000

Charges quoted are for patients with existing dentures which we will convert into overdentures soon after the implants are placed. Patients without an existing denture will need to make a new full arch acrylic denture for S$600. Upper and lower full arch dentures will cost S$1200.
